Brisbane to Mumbai Flights | The Terminal Transfer That Costs You
The thing most likely to go wrong on a Mumbai trip happens on the ground, not in the air, and it happens at four in the morning to somebody who has been travelling for sixteen hours. It is entirely avoidable and it is not on any fare comparison.

Airlines we book on this route
We quote every full-service option and tell you honestly which is the best value for your dates. We do not publish fares because they change daily and the sharpest prices are unpublished wholesale fares. Ask us for today's best price.
| Airline | Typical routing | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Emirates | Via Dubai | The west-India specialist, non-stop from Brisbane. Excellent frequencies and the deepest network on this corridor. |
| Qatar Airways | Via Doha | Brisbane has had its own non-stop to Doha. The Qsuite is the best business seat flying, and Qantas status works. |
| Singapore Airlines | Via Singapore | The Asian alternative. Better geometry, the gentlest transit anywhere, and sectors into Mumbai at sociable hours. |
| Air India | Via Melbourne and Delhi | The one-airline network play. The non-stop trunk and a domestic sector south, baggage through, generous allowances. |
The trap is on the ground
Every other page on this site talks about hubs and fares. This one starts with a road.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International handles international traffic at Terminal 2. Most domestic departures leave from Terminal 1. They are separate buildings with a road between them, and that road is in Mumbai.
So if your trip continues to Goa, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru or anywhere else in India, that "connection" is: clear immigration, collect your bags, leave the airport, travel by road between two buildings in Mumbai traffic, and check in again from the beginning. Performed by a person who has been travelling for sixteen hours. Usually at about four in the morning.
A booking site will happily sell you a ninety-minute version of that on two separate tickets, and take no responsibility when it fails. Ask us to build the Mumbai connection.
The fix, which costs nothing
We ticket the domestic leg with the international one wherever the fares allow.
On a single ticket, the airline owns the connection. The baggage stays checked through to your final Indian city. A late inbound becomes their problem rather than yours, and on several carriers the terminal transfer is handled for you.
Booked separately, a delayed arrival means a forfeited domestic ticket, a lost bag trail, and an argument at a counter at 4am with someone who is entirely correct that it is not their airline's fault.
It is the cheapest insurance on the whole itinerary and it never appears on a comparison site, because comparison sites do not sell responsibility.
The 3am arrival is not the problem
Everyone flinches at the small-hours landing. On this route specifically, they should think again.
Mumbai's traffic is the real journey. The flight lands and then the city begins, and the drive from the airport into the south of the city is a genuine expedition at the wrong hour.
At three in the morning, it is not. Land at 3am, be at the hotel by 3.45am, sleep. Land at 6pm and the same drive can eat two hours of your evening while you watch the meter and your own eyelids.
The rule that makes it work: book the room from the night before. A room booked for "Tuesday" starts on Tuesday afternoon, and you are landing at 3am on Tuesday. That is either a shower and a bed or four hours in a lobby, and it is decided at the point of booking rather than at the airport.
It costs one extra night. It is the cheapest fix available on any India itinerary and nobody mentions it because nobody sells it.
The four patterns
Brisbane's own non-stops make Mumbai a two-aircraft journey on three of them, which is as good as this route gets from anywhere in Australia.
Dubai owns this corridor. Emirates has the deepest network and excellent west-India frequencies, for the straightforward historical reason that the Gulf and west India have been connected by work and family for generations. The geography is an overshoot and the timings and allowances frequently make up for it.
Doha is the premium play. Qatar Airways has served Brisbane non-stop, the Qsuite is the best business seat flying, and it is in Oneworld so your Qantas status works.
Singapore has the better geometry. Singapore Airlines runs the Brisbane non-stop to Changi and sectors into Mumbai at generally sociable hours. If you would rather land in the evening than at dawn, this is usually how.
Delhi is the network play. Air India via the Melbourne non-stop and a domestic sector south, one airline, one ticket, and the most generous baggage on the corridor.
The monsoon clause
November to February is the season. March to May is hot and humid. June to September is the monsoon, and in Mumbai that is not a light shower: heavy days produce genuine delays and, in the worst of it, diversions.
We do not tell clients to avoid travelling then, because plenty of people have no choice and the city has been handling this weather forever. We tell them to build the itinerary differently: a fare class with some flexibility in it, a connection with genuine buffer rather than the tightest legal minimum, and no domestic onward flight scheduled ninety minutes after an international arrival in July.
At the other end of the calendar, the crunch is Diwali and the wedding season, when the diaspora flies home on fixed dates and the allocations go months out. Four to six months of lead time in those windows is the difference between a wholesale fare and whatever is left. Our flights to India page maps the corridor and our Mumbai travel guide covers the city.
Who books this route with us
Families visiting family, which is the corridor's backbone, with fixed dates and heavy bags in both directions.
Wedding parties, in blocks, through the winter season, where the baggage allowance is a real part of the fare comparison. Groups of ten or more go through our group travel service.
Business travellers into India's financial capital, needing fare classes that forgive a change, who usually end up on our corporate flight management service once someone works out what the change fees cost.
Adult children flying parents home, where the assistance chain matters more than the fare. Our flying with elderly parents guide covers it properly.
Onward travellers, using Mumbai as the door to Goa, Rajasthan and Gujarat, for whom the terminal transfer above is the whole ballgame.
Booking tips for this route
- Ticket the domestic leg with the international one. The T2 to T1 transfer is not a corridor.
- Book the room from the night before. Cheapest fix on the whole trip.
- Two aircraft, not three. Brisbane's non-stops make that possible.
- Build for the monsoon if you must travel June to September: flexibility and buffer, not the legal minimum.
- Four to six months for Diwali and the wedding season.
- Allowances beside fares. On a wedding trip the baggage is part of the price.
