The monsoon gets here first

Take one thing from this page. India's monsoon calendar does not start where you think it does, and Kerala is where it starts.

The southwest monsoon makes landfall on this coast before it reaches anywhere else in the country, from around June, and it is serious rain rather than a shower. That makes Kerala the first wet place in India each year and gives Kochi a dramatic season that runs out of step with any India-wide rule of thumb.

For most visitors that means October to March: dry, warm, everything open. April and May are hot and heavy without the relief of rain.

But the monsoon here has a genuine following, and this is the part that surprises people. The Ayurvedic tradition holds that the humid season is when treatment works best, so the clinics fill while the tourists leave. That is a long-standing local view rather than marketing, and it is why the monsoon in Kerala has an audience that the monsoon elsewhere does not. The Colombo shortcut

Here is the routing that almost no Adelaide traveller asks for and that we put in every Kerala quote.

Colombo sits close to Kerala. SriLankan Airlines flies to more of south India than almost any carrier outside India itself, and the hop from Colombo to Kochi is short enough that the connection barely registers as one.

Three things make it work. The geography points the right way, unlike a Gulf routing, which overshoots Kerala and comes back. The last leg is short. And SriLankan is in Oneworld, so if you hold Qantas status it works: lounge, priority, points. Hardly any Australian knows that.

The thing to know is the arrival hour into Colombo, which is frequently between about two and five in the morning. If you are connecting straight through, it is irrelevant. If you are stopping, book the room from the night before and stay at Negombo rather than Colombo, because the airport is ten minutes from one and an hour from the other.

The airport transfer nobody budgets for

This is the Kochi-specific fact that decides your first evening.

Cochin International sits well north of the city. The transfer to Fort Kochi, which is where you should be staying, typically runs to somewhere near an hour and a half, and longer in traffic. That is not a taxi ride. It is a leg.

So a late arrival plus a ninety-minute transfer is a very long day, and it is worth knowing before you choose between two fares that differ by an hour of departure time. Arrange the driver before you fly rather than negotiating one at the kerb after fifteen hours of travel.

One pleasant aside worth knowing: Cochin is, unusually, an airport that runs largely on its own solar generation, which is not something you can say about many. It does not make the transfer shorter. It is just a genuinely good fact.

The four patterns

Singapore is the Adelaide backbone. Singapore Airlines runs the non-stop first leg to Changi and a well-served sector into Kochi. The gentlest transit in Asia and our default for anyone travelling with parents.

Colombo is the shortcut, described above, and the one we price even when nobody asks.

Kuala Lumpur is the value play. Malaysia Airlines is frequently the sharpest fare on the corridor when allocations are open, and it is also in Oneworld.

Dubai is deeper here than you would expect. Emirates and the other Gulf carriers have an unusually dense Kerala network, for the straightforward historical reason that a very large Keralan community has lived and worked in the Gulf for generations. The geography is an overshoot and the frequencies and baggage allowances often make up for it.

Adelaide's own advantage runs underneath all of them: a single integrated terminal means a domestic leg into a Melbourne or Sydney non-stop is a walk, not a bus between buildings. On the same ticket. Never on a separate one.

Where Kerala trips go wrong

Two things, and neither is the flight.

The houseboat. Everyone books the overnight barge at Alappuzha. The large ones cannot enter the narrow canals, so they spend the day on wide open water alongside a great many identical boats. The one-hour Ayurvedic massage. It is a nice massage. Genuine Ayurvedic treatment is a course of one to two weeks, prescribed after a consultation, with a diet and a routine attached. Kerala does both. Knowing the difference lets you choose deliberately rather than be disappointed.
