Two cities, one airport

Hyderabad does not feel like one place. It feels like two, and the distance between them is not only geographic.

The old city is four hundred years old and looks it, in the best way. The Charminar at its centre, the Laad Bazaar selling bangles and attar around it, Golconda Fort on the ridge, the Qutb Shahi tombs, the Chowmahalla Palace, and a food culture that gave India its most argued-about biryani. It is one of the most atmospheric urban quarters in the country and Australians almost never come here.

HITEC City and Gachibowli are the other Hyderabad: glass, campuses, arterial roads, and the reason the city's population and its airport traffic have grown the way they have. It could be anywhere, which is precisely what its residents want from it.

Between them sit Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills, which is where you should probably stay, and where most of the good hotels are.

The mistake is booking one end and planning to spend your days at the other. The drive is long and the traffic is real, and a week spent commuting between the two is a week you did not need to spend that way.

Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills: the sensible answer

This is the middle, and it is the right base for almost every visitor.

Taj Falaknuma Palace is the exception to every rule on this page and deserves its own paragraph. It is a genuine palace on a hill above the old city, restored, extraordinary, and one of the best hotels in India by most measures. It is not in Banjara Hills, it is not convenient to anything, and none of that matters, because you would not stay there for convenience. If your trip has one night where the hotel is the destination, it is this one, and we would tell you to take it.

Back in the real world: Taj Krishna, ITC Kohenur and Park Hyatt Hyderabad anchor the top of the market here, and the mid-range is deep and good because business travellers keep it honest. Restaurants are excellent and the neighbourhoods are pleasant by the standards of a large Indian city.

From here, the old city is a manageable trip rather than an expedition, and HITEC City is reachable if you have a meeting. That is what the middle buys you. Compare Banjara Hills hotels

The old city: for a certain traveller

Staying in the old city is not a normal choice and we would not recommend it to most people. The hotel stock is limited, the area is intensely busy, and the things that make it wonderful during the day, the noise and the density and the sheer life of it, do not stop at bedtime.

But if you have been to India before, if the Charminar at six in the morning before the crowds is the reason you came, and if a pool is not on your list, it is the most rewarding base in the city. You will eat better and see more.

HITEC City: only for work

Same rule as every Indian tech corridor, and we will keep saying it because it keeps saving clients from bad weeks.

If your meetings are in HITEC City or Gachibowli, stay in HITEC City or Gachibowli. The hotels there are good, modern and built for exactly you. They are also surrounded by nothing you came to India for, and your evenings will happen in the hotel.

That is fine for three days of work. It is a poor holiday. If you are mixing both, split the stay: two nights near the office, three nights in Banjara Hills. Almost nobody asks for this and it solves the problem completely.

The airport, which is genuinely remote

Rajiv Gandhi International sits a long way south of the city, well outside it, and the transfer is a real drive rather than a hop.

The rule is the same as Bengaluru's: an airport hotel earns its place for a dawn departure or an arrival late enough that going into the city is pointless, and for nothing else. There is no reason to be out there otherwise.

Most Australians reach Hyderabad with one stop through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the Gulf, and the arrival hours are frequently unhelpful. The calendar

October to March is the season, and the winter months here are genuinely pleasant rather than merely bearable.

April to June is severe. This is the Deccan plateau in summer, and anyone who can leave, leaves.

June to September is the monsoon, which cools things down and softens the rates. It is a perfectly workable time to visit a city whose attractions are mostly forts, tombs and food.

The spikes are wedding season and the major conferences, which fill the Banjara Hills hotels and the business properties respectively. Ramadan transforms the old city's food scene into something extraordinary at night, and it is a genuinely good reason to time a trip if you are interested in eating.
